Emergency Dentistry

Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly, and we understand how distressing they can be. Our team will always do our best to see patients experiencing urgent dental problems as quickly as possible.

What Is a Dental Emergency?

Please contact us promptly if you experience any of the following:

  • Severe toothache that is preventing you from sleeping, eating or carrying out your normal daily activities.
  • Facial swelling affecting the gums, jaw or face.
  • A knocked-out tooth or dental trauma following an accident.
  • A broken tooth causing significant pain.
  • Persistent bleeding following a dental extraction that does not stop after applying firm pressure for 20 minutes.
  • Signs of infection, such as swelling accompanied by fever or feeling generally unwell.

When Should I Go to A&E?

You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • Facial swelling affecting your breathing, swallowing or vision.
  • Difficulty opening your mouth due to rapidly increasing swelling.
  • Significant facial trauma associated with loss of consciousness, vomiting or double vision.

Problems That Are Usually Not Dental Emergencies

Although these issues can be uncomfortable and may still require treatment, they can usually wait for the next available appointment:

  • Lost or loose crowns, bridges or veneers
  • Broken, loose or lost fillings
  • Chipped teeth without pain
  • Loose orthodontic wires
  • Broken or uncomfortable dentures
  • Bleeding gums without swelling or severe pain

Managing Dental Discomfort at Home

Over-the-counter pain relief can help manage symptoms until you are seen by a dentist. Always follow the instructions provided with the medication and check that it is suitable for you.

Maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding very hot, cold or sugary foods, and keeping the affected area as clean as possible can also help minimise discomfort.

If your symptoms worsen, swelling develops or pain becomes severe, please contact us for further advice.

Self-Care Advice Until Your Appointment

Sensitive Teeth

Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods may be caused by exposed dentine, tooth wear or dental decay. Keeping the area clean and using a fluoride toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth may help reduce discomfort until you can attend your appointment.

If a tooth is cracked or has a temporary loss of structure, avoid chewing on that side and contact us for assessment.

Wisdom Tooth Discomfort

Wisdom teeth can sometimes cause soreness as they erupt. Gentle but thorough cleaning around the area, warm saltwater rinses and a soft diet may help ease symptoms.

If you develop swelling, difficulty swallowing or increasing pain, please contact us as soon as possible.

Mouth Ulcers

Most mouth ulcers heal naturally within 7–14 days. Maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding foods that irritate the area can help improve comfort.

Any ulcer or sore area that has not healed within three weeks should be assessed by a dentist or GP.

After a Tooth Extraction

Some discomfort and mild oozing are normal following an extraction. Follow the aftercare instructions provided by your dentist and avoid smoking, vigorous rinsing and strenuous activity during the initial healing period.

If bleeding persists despite applying firm pressure for 20 minutes, or if pain significantly worsens rather than improves, please contact us.

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are commonly associated with gum inflammation and are often improved through effective brushing and cleaning between the teeth. If bleeding persists despite good oral hygiene, we recommend arranging an examination.

Lost Crowns

If your crown has come away but you are comfortable, keep it safe and contact us to arrange an appointment. Avoid chewing on the affected side and keep the tooth clean until it can be assessed.
